After adventure? Head out to Galloway Forest park, the largest in the UK, offering some 300 square miles of idyllic woodland scenery. There is a great range of walking trails, from gentle ambles to challenging mountain hikes to choose from.
The exceptional darkness due to controls on light pollution allows you to see parts of the night sky not usually visible. You could be one of the few people in the UK to see our own galaxy, the Milky Way, which due to the sheer number of stars it contains, appears like wispy cloud running across the sky.
With the designation as a gold tier Dark Sky Park, Galloway Forest Park enjoys some of the best views and conditions for stargazing.
Galloway is a fantastic place to cycle. Off road, through the trees and moors of the lower slopes of the Galloway Hills, or on the quiet roads of Gatehouse of Fleet, you can wheel away to your heart's content.
Cycle to the Big water of Fleet Viaduct - The Portpatrick & Wigtownshire Joint Railway, often known as the Port Road, linked Stranraer to Castle Douglas where it made an end-on connection with a line to Dumfries. It was authorised by an Act of Parliament in August 1857 and opened in March 1861. Now its a haven for cyclist and walkers alike.
